Pamela Louderback, Day 29 : Part I (Pics of St. Mary's and Culturlann Centre)

It dawned on me that I hadn't shared the few pictures I thought to snap while at St. Mary's University College and the Culturlann Centre.  Below, you will find photos of some of the resources St. Mary's provides teachers in the area.

Wide shot of variety of resources in the Resources Centre at St. Mary's.  This is actually only about 1/4 of what they have available.  To the right - through the wood trimmed windowed area is another whole room dedicated to creating authentic Irish language materials and placing these materials in specific levels as we do in the States.

Also, photos of a book written in the English language with Irish words pasted over the English ones.  Note the sections "taped" over the English words underneath.

The finished product gets sent along to be published.   Again, note taped portions that replace English words with Irish.  Of course, the pictures of the original text are left.

It's quite a testament to the passion these individuals have in providing quality resources so teachers can use them in their classes when teaching the Irish language.  The amount of time and effort placed on this process, and the attention to detail to insure proper terms is nothing short of spectacular!

Colm working on translations and technology multi-media products.  They create products similar to LeapFrog.  For speakers, they use native speakers to say the words to insure proper enunciation, inflection, etc.  Again, attention to detail is superb at all levels in every product they create.

Also, I have included the photos of Culturlann Centre's gift shop area, the tourist information area, and the restaurant area.  I was a bit rushed when we visited for lunch but will definitely return to get a better look at everything.

Culturlann Centre's Reception/Information desk area where you can book tours and get information on the area.

This is a shot of a couple of locals with the background shot of part of the gift shop located at the Culturlann Centre.

Another shot of the gift sho at Culturlann.  Lots of things to look at (next time)

Photo of Ciaran O Pronntaigh - he works in the Resources area of St. Mary's.  Behind him is a shot of the kitchen area at the Culturlann.

Colm Mac Aindreasa giving a "cheers" before our lunch begins.

Other customers eating lunch at Culturlann's dining area.  The food was very tasty -- huge portions and reasonably priced.  I, of course, was one of few speaking English.  It was altogether, a fine day.

I also decided to give you a view of some of the things I see every night walking back to my apartment from the office.  The first photo is that of Beatrice Kennedy's fine dining establishment.

Beatrice Kennedy's is at the corner of University Road and University Street (where my apartment is situated) so I walk by it every night on my way home.  It's painted pink and looks quite lovely in the evening with the lights shining on it and as a backdrop to the tree that grows in front of it.  As usual, the photo doesn't do justice to the hues.

The China China buffet is right across the street from my apartment approximately 500 yards further on.  It's always busy -- parking is at a premium to nonexistent -- and I've heard from the locals that it has very good food for reasonable prices.  One of these days, I'll have to check it out and give a report!

I couldn't help but take a picture of the full moon.  It's ringed in a haze of clouds and stars.  This is my view from my living room apartment window - very beautiful, indeed.  Hope you enjoy the photos.

Enjoy!
